State Strategies in STEM

National Lieutenant Governors Association Members know the value and importance of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) education (STEAM education when Art is included), and the impact that states and territories can have to improve STEM opportunities for all students, to ultimately strengthen the workforce and economy, improving the lives of people. In 2022, NLGA Members created the Center for State Strategies in STEM as a major pillar of work for the Association.

NLGA conducts the NLGA Lt. Governors’ STEM Scholarship Program annually and the NLGA STEM Service Project at two meetings per year.  Simply by coming together at NLGA meetings, the nation’s lieutenant governors and seconds-in-command leverage their bipartisan collaboration to enable NLGA to bring STEM education opportunities to constituents in the states and U.S. territories through innovative projects.

More than 14,000 students and youth in 31 states and territories have STEM opportunity as a direct result of NLGA Members meeting and working together.

Impacted states and territories to date include Alabama, Alaska, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Guam, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
